This is a Piece that The Eastern Graphic Wrote Dec. 28/2016
On the weekend of January 6 to 8, 2017, the Montague Curling Club will be filled with the friends, family and fellow curlers of 23-year old Cody Dixon who passed away suddenly after a brief illness on September 11, 2016.
Organized by his girlfriend Katelyn Johnston and friend Dylan Lowery, the event is more than just a curling competition. Their hope is people will gather to play the sport that Mr. Dixon was dedicated to, at a place he spent much of his time to remember and share stories about their friend.
“That is actually one of our main goals and an important part of the bonspiel for all of us,” Ms. Johnston said. “First and foremost, the event is about Cody and having a good time.”
As natural as it seemed to them to organize the bonspiel in his honor, so too did raising funds for the IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax, something else that was important to Mr. Dixon.
“The day Cody was born he was flown to the IWK and visited there many times as a child for a heart condition,” Ms. Johnston said. “He thought it was a great facility and had told me on a few occasions he would never turn down an opportunity to support it. For the first year of the bonspiel, it seemed like a great fit to direct the proceeds toward the IWK.”
With space for 32 teams, spots are still available for curlers 16 years plus with a guarantee of three games per team.
“We want everyone to have a good time and come back another year. Cody curled for fun and competitively so we have a lot of participants with different skill levels involved. We hope the games will stay light and fun and people will just enjoy the game and the company,” Ms. Johnston said.
The curling is open to the public to watch and non-curlers are invited to enjoy the Saturday night, January 7, entertainment with Muddy Buddy beginning at 9pm. A $5 admission will also be donated to the IWK.
Ms. Johnston and Mr. Lowery are very pleased with the tremendous support they have received from local businesses that have donated prizes and came on board as sponsors.
“Scotiabank has also partnered with us and are willing to match any proceeds the volunteers help us raise so that is very awesome,” Ms. Johnston said.
